Take good care of your spine

The spine is the structural framework that carries the body, keeping the head, the torso and the limbs in motion. Together with the spinal cord, which is housed by the spine, it is the main organ of movement and coordination of all life processes taking place in the body.

In mammals, the spine consists of 24 vertebrae and 2 fused vertebrae. Ever since the Homo Sapiens took an upright position hundreds of millions years ago, its spine has been subjected to a much greater load.

The spine is hidden deep inside the body, and we become aware of its presence only when it refuses to support us. The treatment of spine injuries and dysfunctions is a long-term and complex process. This is why prevention plays a very important role. We should actively prevent situations that contribute to spinal curvature, scoliosis and structural deformations and the premature ageing of the spine. Diseases of the spine and the joints are the most frequent cause of chronic pain and disability. Spine problems lead to a variety of other disorders. This may be due to the spine's size and the proximity of internal organs. According to the generally acknowledged principles of natural medicine, a healthy spine is the energy pillar of the entire body, which facilitates a free flow of intracellular information. Spinal canal blockage, compression of the intervertebral discs and nerve plexi slow down the body's physiological functions. The body stops breathing and is not supplied with enough oxygen.

In many countries, spinal disorders are a social problem. Back pain affects both children and adults, and due to its spread and intensity, it can be regarded as lifestyle disease that poses a financial burden on the society. According to spine specialist, 80-90% of spine problems have a mechanical cause (injury, static strain, lack of exercise, frequent stress, accident, etc.), while only a small number of spinal disorders result directly from bone diseases. Most spine problems are treated "mechanically" without the use of drugs. The most effective drug will not solve the problem - it might relieve pain, but strained spine structures and weak, flabby muscles have to be rebuilt through own work, self-discipline, exercise and often a radical change of lifestyle and habits. As part of a well-planned rehabilitation regime, patients will have to become involved in various types of activity and make many sacrifices, which would not be necessary had they been kinder to their backs in the past.
